I’m sure everyone has seen this commercial on tv or online someplace. If you haven’t, take a few minutes to watch. The goal of this commercial is to remind us to make nature a part of our everyday lives. To go out and play, to hike, to spend time with family.
It’s meant to tug at your heartstrings and reflecting on my own childhood most of it was spent outside playing and working with my mom and grandma. We didn’t really go on the computer or watch any movies until after it was dark and we had finished dinner.  On the other side of it though technology today is not comparable to technology in the late 90’s and early 2000’s when I was growing up(acting like I’m so old and wise here 😉 ). Our parents and grandparents will never experience growing up in this age of technology being everywhere and a part of daily life. It’s a new experience for everyone: parents have to learn how to change how they support and help their children grow with technology being a part of life. It’s here, you can’t ignore it so we have to learn what we do with it.
It’s not fair to blame children for not being interested in anything but the digital world, it’s our job to work harder than our parents did to raise our children to go outside to fish and run around. When cell phones, tablets and laptops weren’t available you had two options go outside or be bored, so what did you choose? It’s not as easy today and we have to reflect that it’s not just these “millennials” and lazy children. We’re living in a new age and we have to adapt.
This is a lot coming from someone who doesn’t have children but I do have an 11 yr old brother and I see how different his childhood truly is compared to mine and I’m still on the right side of my 20s! I also think that when he’s much older and reflects on his childhood he’s going to be talking about going to the beach, quading and hanging out by the pool, not video games. I appreciate this commercial because we should be spending more time outside, however theres much more to this story.
